| I have recently purchased the RAT7 and CRKT M60 large tanto. Both are of good design and first time out held their
ground quite well. The CRKT M60 is more of a tactical knife than a suited
survival knife. When I did use the knife however it preformed well and I
could not complain. Both are full tang construction as should all good
survival knives. Some of the tasks I put the knives through
included chopping, splitting, scraping, shaving, and beaver chewing. I made
some fire boards for both hand and bow drill. When it can to making the
notches the combo edge I chose for both knives chewed through the fire board
with extreme ease. Using the serrated edge I found that the ability of these
knives to chew through the wood to be phenomenal.
Batoning through heavier more dense wood proved to be a challenge
with pieces larger than the length of the blade witch would be obvious.
General splitting of wood was done with extreme ease.
Chopping with these two knives was also not a problem. Removing
branches from limbs was again easy and done with little effort. Larger
branches were chopped threw with simplicity due to the weight of the RAT7
but took a little more effort with the lighter M60 but no complaints.
Everything I did with these knives were everyday tasks that would
normally be done in a survival situation or while camping. These knives are
definitely able to hold their salt in a desert situation as well as a
woodland or possible a jungle. I see no apparent reason to not use these
knives in the field. They are both well built and extremely durable.
The sheaths of both, I was pleased with. Both were ballistic nylon
with heavy straps that will firmly secure the knives to you. The CRKT M60 is
held in with two straps around the handle giving added assurance that the
knife will stay put. The sheath of both are both lined with a kydex liner
for rigidity. Both have decent outside pockets for added storage. I
particularly liked the RAT7 sheath for the MOLLIE attachment capability.
This makes it possible to attach the knife to a pack or vest with ease.
The drop leg design of CRKT M60 is also a great feature. This gives freedom
of movement while carrying other gear like packs in which the straps would
become a problem. This keeps the knife lower and out of the way.
